About the Front

The "Coronavirus in the favelas" campaign started on March 19 as an initiative promoted by some community members from Maré, a complex of 16 favelas in the Northern area of Rio de Janeiro, with approximately 140.000 residents. Over time, more residents and associations joined the initiative. The initial objective was to promote actions that would provide information to the residents of the 16 communities on the importance of protecting themselves form Covid-19, of adopting hygiene procedures and respecting self-isolation. Now we are the Mobilization Front Maré. Our goal is not only to promote an alternative and local communication within Maré,  but also to facilitate the donation of sanitizin / cleaning products and food to be distributed to residents during this period of crisis.

Initiatives

Since the spread of Covid-19, we have worked on different communication media. We produced new audios broadcast in the different communities through megaphones installed in soud-equipped cars circulating in the streets of the communities Moreover, we designed pamphlets about prevention actions  as well as posters and other materials to stick on the walls in public areas.

We are currently working on the production of videos and images to be spread in social media, highlighting the importance of hygiene procedures and of the use of protection masks against the virus. We are also informing residents through our social media with the daily statistics of Covid-19, including the numbers of infected people and deaths.

We have also started a food and hygiene materials donation campaign, and are now carrying out  the registration of families the donations will go to.

Collectives and Institutions involved

Where do we operate?

Maré is a group of favelas formed by 16 communities with aroun 140 thousand residents. The area is close to the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation and the International Airport of Galeão, and lies between the main highways in the city of Rio de Janeiro - Avenida Brasil, Yellow and Red Lines and BRT Transcarioca.

The population of Maré is at risk!

The situation of many families in these communities is serious, with partial or total loss of income. According to data from Agência Brasil 2019, informal work grew 7.7% (compared to the previous year). We know that self-employment and working conditions without a formal contract have been increasing significantly in the country. Because of the social isolation imposed by the rapid spread of COVID-19, many self-employed people find themselves without income for family subsistence. Moreover, part of the local population does not have access to adequate basic sanitation, which makes the reality even more dramatic because it implies a greater probability of exposure of residents to the Coronavirus. Finally, the city of Rio de Janeiro has drastically cut the resources destined to public health, which can generate chaos for the population of Maré.

Donations

The Maré Mobilization Front works to minimize the terrible effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on local communities. We are more than 50 volunteers engaged in this struggle, between residents, popular communicators, social workers and professionals in the areas of Education and Health. Since the beginning of March, the collective has been carrying out a large local communication campaign throughout the territory informing people about the symptoms of COVID-19, the prevention procedures, with an emphasis on the urgency to adopt social distancing habits.

Who do donations go to?

This scenario is critical and requires urgent social protection actions for residents. For this reason, the entire amount collected by this campaign will be used to purchase food, cleaning and hygiene materials for families in greater social vulnerability. Our goal is to serve 250 families in the 16 communities of Maré, during the months of April, May and June. These families were registered by the volunteers of the Frente de Mobilização da Maré collective in dialogue with NGOs, Family Clinics and schools in the territory.

We are convinced that we will be able to go through this time of doubts and anguish, building on solidarity actions. We count on your collaboration to create a solidarity Maré!
