Abstract[editar | editar código-fonte]
The core focus of analysis in the article Rumors of ‘Pacification': The Arrival of the UPP and Changes in Public Problems in Santa Marta and Cidade de Deus are the rumors that have circulated around Santa Marta and Cidade de Deus since November 2008, when the police occupied these favelas where, subsequently, the first Pacification Police Units of Rio de Janeiro were established. In this study I suggest that analyzing this kind of “improvised news” can help us understand the transformations of public concerns and issues that have affected the routines of “pacified” favela residents over the last five years. This reflection is based on an ethnographic study conducted in Santa Marta since 2009 and in Cidade de Deus since 2012.
